Arriving
Having Swabian roots myself, Swabian-Alemannic Carnival (“Fasnet”) had been on my bucket list for quite a while. Finally, in February 2023, I went to Stockach to take a plunge into Stockemer Fasnet.
After a scenic train ride along the Black Forest, I arrived at Radolfzell on Lake Constance in the late afternoon. Stockach is only a stone’s throw from here.
Day 1 – Sunday
In the morning, I attended church. The service was crazy but not foolish by any means. The sermon was completely delivered in rhyme, and all the liturgy was in rhyme too. It was a source of wise inspiration.
Fasnet Parade in Ludwigshafen
I spontaneously joined some people who were going to watch the Ludwigshafen Fasnet parade. Ludwigshafen is only about 6 km away from Stockach. The name of the Ludwigshafen Fasnet guild is Seehasen (Lake Bunnies).
Day 2 – Monday
In the evening, there was a Hemedglonker Parade in Stockach which was concluded with the burning of a huge Hemedglonker effigy. The Hemedglonker (Shirt Glonker) character goes back to students in Konstanz mocking their supposedly eccentric teachers in nightshirts and nightcaps. Teachers beware!
